
Spartans Slay Cobras in Saturday Night Showcase
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (2-0) women's basketball team defeated Virginia Intermont University (0-2) in a 73-49 contest Saturday night at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
Tampa came out with great momentum going on a 9-0 run in the opening three minutes of the game. Freshman Juliana Cavallaro scored all nine points for the Spartans converting three of three from beyond the arc. The Spartans were able to snag 17 points off 17 Virginia Intermont turnovers, ultimately contributing to the 35-33 halftime advantage.
Cavallaro led her squad at the half with 15 points as teammate Catherine Matthews chipped in with 13 points.
Kayla Orrick led the way for Virginia Intermont with 11 points to keep the Cobras within striking distance. The Cobras outrebounded the Spartans 19-17 but still trailed by 13 at the half.
The Spartans maintained the same energy they possessed in the first half. Tampa continued to capitalize off 30 total Virginia Intermont turnovers and pulled away for the 24 point victory.
Cavallaro led all scorers with 26 points to finish the game. Matthews chipped in 22 points, 18 of which were 3-pointers as she connected on six from beyond the arc. Illyssa Vivo added eight rebounds as Shamika Williams led all Spartans with six assists.
The Cobras didn't have an answer for the Spartans in the second half suffering deficits of 10 or more points. Orrick and teammate Krista Cox led the Cobras with a total of 13 and 11 points, respectfully to finish the game.
The Spartans will hit the hardwood again Friday, November 16 against Lindenwood at 5:30 p.m., at the Saint Leo tournament.
