Spartans Fall To Devils
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 5 University of Tampa Spartans (6-2) hosted the University of the Sciences Devils (3-4) on Monday night at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center. A four point play at the end of regulation propelled the Devils to a 66-65 victory.
The Spartans jumped out to a 36-24 lead at the end of the first half, behind a 50 percent (12-24) shooting effort overall. Junior Ellen Nurmi led the charge with 14 points, including nine points coming from three-point land.
The momentum shifted in the second half of play, as the Devils used a 22-11 run to pull within four points of the Spartans. The two teams continued battling until the last few seconds of the game. With 2.6 seconds remaining on the clock, Jessica Sylvester converted on a four point play to give the Devils the victory.
Junior Juliana Cavallaro led the way for UT, as she racked up 16 points on the night. Nurmi (14), Candace Martino (12), and Aisha Rodney (12) each collected double figures on the night.
Tampa will be back in action this weekend, as they travel to Lakeland to play in the Florida Southern Tournament. They match up with Eastern New Mexico on Friday and Molloy on Saturday. Both contest are scheduled to tipoff at 1:00PM.
