Spartans Open 2015 With Victory Over Fighting Knights
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa women's basketball team (8-3, 2-0) opened up 2015 with a victory over the visiting Lynn Fighting Knights (5-5, 0-2). The Spartans used a strong defensive effort en route to a 59-44 victory.
UT used a strong defensive effort in the first half, as they held the Fighting Knights to just 4-28 (14.3%) shooting from the field. Their defensive efforts gave them a 23-15 lead going into the half. Junior Candace Martino led the way offensively, as she racked up nine points in the first 20 minutes of play.
The Spartans offense picked up in the second half as they scored 36 points, including 12 from three-point rang. Junior Ellen Nurmi collected 12 points in the half, with nine of those points coming from beyond the arc.
Nurmi and senior Aisha Rodney led the way with 14 points a piece. Martino and Junior Juliana Cavallaro added double digit points with 11 and 10 respectively.
Tampa will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to St. Petersburg to take on the Eckerd College Tritons.
