Spartans Cruise Past Sailfish
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa Spartans used tenacious defense as they routed the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 64- 39 Saturday afternoon in the Bob Martinez Athletics Center. With the victory, the Spartans improve to 10-5 on the year, while the Sailfish fall to 5-14.
Juliana Cavallaro led the way for Tampa, as the junior racked up 15 points on the day, as all 15 points came from behind the three-point line. Cavallaro shot 50% (5-10), which ties her career high in three-point field goals made in a single game.
In the first half of play, Tampa jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back as they led the game wire to wire. As a team, UT's defense held the Sailfish to 25.7% shooting (9-for-35) in the opening period, while also out rebounding the opponent 27-16, en route to a 31-20 halftime lead.
In the second half, Tampa continued with their defensive efforts as they held Palm Beach Atlantic to 22.2% (6-27) from the field. UT's defense caused a drought for PBA, as the Sailfish were held with out a field goal from the 18:27 mark up until the 7:32 mark in the second half.
Tampa won the rebounding battle 49-31, while also dishing out 22 assists, as opposed to Palm Beach Atlantic's five. The Spartans also held the Sailfish to 10% (1-10) from beyond the arc.
Senior Angela Alvarez scored a career high 15 points, along with 11 rebounds. This is Alvarez's second double-double in the past three games. Candace Martino contributed with a game high eight assists.
The Spartans will be back in action on Wednesday, as they welcome in the Florida Southern Mocs. Tip-off is set for 5:30 P.M.
