Spartans Top Moccains in Midweek Contest
TAMPA, Fla. - Staying strong throughout the final minutes of play, The University of Tampa women's basketball team edged Florida Southern in a midweek matchup, 63-52, in the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
The Spartans improve to 11-5 overall, 4-2 in the Sunshine State Conference, while the Moccasins drop to 8-7, 2-4 SSC.
Tampa's Aisha Rodney shined on both sides of the court, tallying 20 points while capturing eight rebounds. Juliana Cavallaro notched 14 points, including shooting a perfect 4-4 from the line. Ellen Nurmi totaled 11 points in addition to four assists throughout the contest.
Despite the loss, Florida Southern's Jensen Blassage recorded 11 points while three additional Mocs tallied eight points apiece.
Rodney led the Spartans from the beginning with nine points and five rebounds in the first half of play. Cavallaro posted six points and added four more rebounds to total the Spartans' 21 for the half.
With Karma Jeremie's three assists and Nurmi's two, the Spartans were set for success in the second half, finalizing the score at 63.
Florida Southern demonstrated tough effort as four Moccasins posted six points apiece in the second half, but they were unable to overcome the Spartan offense.
The Spartans take the court again on Saturday at Rollins in Winter Park, Florida at 2 p.m.
