
Lions Claw Out Victory Over Spartans
SAINT LEO, Fla. - The University of Tampa Spartans hit the road for a mid week conference battle against the Saint Leo Lions. A late three pointer lifted the Lions to a 63-61 victory.
Tampa drops to 14-9 overall and 7-6 in conference play, while Saint Leo improves to 9-15 and 4-10 in conference play.
Senior Aisha Rodney and junior Juliana Cavallaro paced the way for the Spartans, as they each recorded 22 points. Junior Ellen Nurmi also contributed with double-figures as she added 10 points on the night. Cavallaro also recorded a game high eight rebounds.
Mary Redman led the way for Saint Leo as she recorded 17 points.
The Lions controlled the first half, leading by as many as 11 points. Tampa closed out the half strong, going on a 12-7 run over the final 4:17 to cut the halftime deficit to 32-28.
The second half of play was back and forth, as the biggest lead was five points by Tampa at the 9:55 mark. With 1:20 left, SLU's Mary Redman hit a three pointer to give them a 60-57 lead. On the ensuing possession, Cavallaro made a layup to pull UT within one. The Lions then went on to make three key free throws to seal the victory.
Tampa will be back in action on Saturday, as they welcome in the No. 14 ranked Rollins College Tars. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
