McVey Helps Spartans Power Past Eagles
TAMPA, Fla. – Behind a career performance from center Tayor McVey, the Tampa Spartans defeated the Embry-Riddle Eagles by a final score of 73-59. The win moves the Spartans to 2-3 and drops the Eagles to 2-2.
McVey came off the bench this game, as the Spartans post player scored a career high 22 points. McVey went 9-11 from the field, as she also added eight rebounds on the night. Sophomore Karma Jeremie earned her first start of the year, as the guard just missed her career high as she scored 11 points.
UT had two other players in double figures as Elena de Alfredo and Ellen Nurmi scored 17 and 11 points respectively.
In the first quarter of play the two teams traded points as the Eagles took an early 13-10 lead. The Spartans shot a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line in the opening 10 minutes, as McVey led the way with six points.
In the second quarter, ERAU started with a 8-0 run to build up a 21-12 lead and force a UT timeout. The Spartans went on an 8-0 run of their own with 5:29 left to play in the half to cut the deficit to 23-21. At the 2:54 mark, the Spartans started another 8-0 run that lasted the rest of the half, as they took a 31-28 lead into the half.
Jeremie and McVey led the team with seven points a piece. McVey also had a game high seven first half rebounds.
The Spartans held the lead in the second half lead as they outscored the Eagles 22-18 in the third quarter and 20-13 in the fourth. McVey scored 11 points in the third to pace the Spartans.
As a team, Tampa shot 58.1 percent (25-43) while holding Embry-Riddle to 33.3 percent (20-60).
The Spartans also outrebounded the Eagles 35-30, and won the assists battle at 18-14. UT also picked up 33 bench points.
The Spartans will be back in action this weekend as they participate in the Washington, DC tournament. UT will play Chowan on Saturday and District of Colombia on Sunday.
