Tampa Takes Bite Out Of Chowan
WASHINGTON, DC. – The University of Tampa Spartans women's basketball played the Chowan University Hawks in the first game of the Washington, DC Tournament held by the University of the District of Columbia. The Tampa defense shined as they beat Chowan 63-41.
On the boards, Angela Alvarez and Karma Jeremie shined as they picked up 12 and 10 rebounds respectively.
The defense was a key factor for UT, as they held CU to just 20 percent (12-60) from the field. Chowan also scored less than 10 points in three of the four quarters. The Spartans also dominated in the paint as they outscored the Hawks 30-14 down low.
In the first half of play Tampa used tenacious defense to take a 24-18 lead into the half. The Spartans limited the Hawks to just 25 percent (7-27) from the field and 18 percent (2-11) from three. Tampa was also able to force nine Chowan turnovers, as they picked up six steals.
Cavallaro paced UT as she led the team with six points in the half. Coming off the bench, Alvarez led the Spartans on the boards, as she collected six.
In the second half Tampa outscored Chowan 39-23 en route to the 22-point victory. In the second half, UT's defense continued to shine as they held CU to just 15.2 percent (5-33) from the field. Tampa also continued its dominance on the glass, as they outrebounded Chowan 28-16 in the second stanza.
Emma Karamovic scored her first career points, as the freshman from Sweden made a late three-point basket.
Tampa will be in action again tomorrow as they take on District of Columbia.
