Spartans Extend SSC Win Streak to Five
Elena de Alfredo's double-double leads Spartans to 71-57 victory
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa Spartans women's basketball team (11-8, 5-4) defeated the Rollins College Tars (8-9, 4-5) by a final score of 71-57 Saturday afternoon in the Bob Martinez Center. The Spartans win marked their fifth Sunshine State Conference victory on the season and extended their SSC winning streak to five games.
In first half action, play stayed close and consistent right from the get-go. With an up-tempo half taking place, the Spartans were able to edge the Tars by distributing points to every player. The Spartans went 14 of 27 from the field, including cashing in on five three-point field goals. The Tars shot a measly 10 of 36 from the field and had four three-point field goals of their own. Elena de Alfredo, Candace Martino, and Taylor McVey led the Spartans in first half scoring with six points each.
In second half play, the Spartans picked up the pace and were able to run away with it thanks to good ball movement and lock down defense. UT was able to extend their lead to as much as 23 and kept the Tars off the scoreboard. The Spartans finished 25 of 46, converting on nine three-point field goals. The Tars finished 23 of 65, five of those counting as three-point field goals. Juliana Cavallaro led the Spartans in second half scoring with 10 points.
Elena de Alfredo and Juliana Cavallaro led Tampa in scoring, both finishing with 15 points. It was de Alfredo's game as she recorded a double-double with a stat line of 15 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. Karma Jeremie came up big on the boards for the Spartans, grabbing eight rebounds.
The Spartans will be back in action Wednesday, January 27th in Melbourne, Fla. where they face off against the Florida Tech Panthers. UT dropped its first matchup with Florida Tech on November 18th by a final score of 68-60. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 PM and will be available for live stream.
