Tampa Ranked #8 In Latest WBCA Poll
Tampa, Fla. - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has released its new and updated rankings for the 2024-25 season. In the first WBCA rankings since the start of the new season, the Spartans landed at #8 in the D2 Top 25 Coaches Poll. The WBCA was founded in the 1980's and puts out rankings for all three divisions of Women's College Basketball across the NCAA. The Spartans were picked fourth in the preseason by the WBCA after making it the Elite Eight last year and returning five key players. After a 4-1 start to the season, this team is still in full control of their destiny.
The Spartans opened their season in dominant fashion by going 3-0 in the CCA Canadian Tip-Off Classic. Multiple Spartans played outstanding basketball while in Canada, including Zoe Piller who would walk away from opening weekend being named the first SSC Player of the Week award winner. After wrapping up games in Canada, the team came home to prepare for their home opener against Clark Atlanta on Nov 8th. The Spartans would come up short in the home opener, falling to Clark Atlanta and suffering their first loss of the season. They would bounce back from this loss with a huge 32 point victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State on Nov 16th. This game showcased the team's elite defensive talent while fans also saw four Spartans record double-digit points.
Through the first five games of the season the Spartans have proved that they are a top ten team in the country. Tampa will look to continue their strong start at home when they face Georgian Court on the 26th, then the Spartans will host back to back games in the Tampa Thanksgiving Classic on the 29th (Concord) and 30th (UMary). Fans should check the team social media pages (@UTAMPAWBB) for game updates and behind the scenes looks at the teams quest for both a conference championship and another deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
