Kiira Riihijarvi Earns NCAA Tournament Bid
Sophomore looks to defend her NCAA South Super Regional championship.
INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA announced its field for the 2018 Division II Women's Golf Championships, selecting Kiira Riihijarvi from the University of Tampa as an individual for its South Super Regional. The tournament will take place on May 7-9 at Germantown Country Club in Memphis, Tenn.
Riihijarvi, a sophomore from Oulu, Finland, was the champion of the 2017 NCAA South Super Regional as a freshman. Her rounds of 78, 72 and 70 made her the first Spartan to win a regional as she is also the lone player in program history to compete in the NCAA tournament.
As a sophomore, Riihijarvi recently finished eighth at the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. She has competed in 10 events for the Spartans in 2017-18, averaging 75.46 per round. In 26 rounds, she shot a season-low round of 69 at the Saint Leo Invitational and hit it again at the World Golf Invitational.
A WGCA second-team All-American in 2017, she advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Findlay, Ohio, where she finished ninth overall with a total score of 307. She shot rounds of 77, 77, 78 and 75 at the championships.
With four super regionals, each site will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently with 12 teams and 6 individuals from non-qualifying teams at each site. All participants will compete through the 54 holes of competition. The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from each super regional will advance to the championships.
