Spartans Drop First Road Contest to Queens
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The University of Tampa women's lacrosse team had five players net a goal but it wasn't enough as they fell to Queens University, 17-5, Friday night at the Queens Sports Complex. With the win Queens improves to 2-1, while the Spartans drop to 0-2.
Queens struck first scoring two goals on their first two possessions to give the Royals a 2-0 lead. Minutes later Emilie Barbosa connected with Morgan Cheripko for a goal and cut the deficit to 2-1 with 27:36 left in the first half.
The Royals scored eight straight goals to take a 10-1 lead with 13:50 remaining. Maggie Griffo scored an unassisted goal, before the Royals netted three more goals to take a 13-2 lead into the break.
The second half began similar to the first as the Royals scored back-to-back goals to extend their lead to 15-2. Minutes later, Eileen Barrett picked up a ground ball off a Royals turnover, and found the back of the cage for a goal.
Two minutes later, Mallory Mays put a free position shot past the goalie to cut the deficit to 15-4 with 10:18 left in the game. After a Royals goal, Kerry Glenday connected with Barboa for a goal to make the score 16-5, which is how the game would end.
Barbosa led the Spartans with two points, while Cheripko tallied a goal and picked up six draw controls. Wylie Cassidy made seven saves in the contest.
The Spartans will wrap up their two game road trip on Sunday, February 23, when they travel to Belmont, N.C., to take on Belmont Abbey at 2 p.m.
