Spartans Fall to Belmont Abbey
Belmont, N.C. - The University of Tampa Women's Lacrosse Team couldn't overcome an early deficit as they fell 17-7 to Belmont Abbey, Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. With the win Belmont Abbey improves to 2-0, while the Spartans drop to 0-3.
The Crusaders struck first as Mackenzie Miller converted a free position shot to give Belmont Abbey a 1-0 lead. The Spartans responded minutes later as Mallory Mays scored a man-down goal to tie the game 1-1. Belmont Abbey scored seven straight goals over a 15 minute period to give the Crusaders an 8-1 lead with 4:58 remaining in the first half. Minutes later Amanda Voges connected with Kerry Glenday to cut the deficit to 8-2. Belmont Abbey scored three times in the final 1:10 of the first half to take an 11-2 lead into the break.
Katelin Glass netted an unassisted goal for the Crusaders just over a minute into the second half. The Spartans won the ensuing draw control and Eileen Barrett shot found the back of the cage to cut the deficit to 12-3. After a Crusaders goal, Voges converted a free position shot with 24:01 left in the second half. The two teams traded goals twice, before Emilie Barbosa scored an unassisted goal to bring the Spartans within eight goals. Belmont Abbey scored twice more for the 17-7 final.
Barrett and Mays each netted a pair of goals, while Voges tallied a goal and an assist in the contest. Wylie Cassidy made 12 saves in the cage for the Spartans.
The Spartans will return to action Tuesday, March 4, when they host Newberry College at 7:00 p.m. at Namoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex. Live stats and a video webcast will be available through TampaSpartans.tv.
