Cheripko win Freshman of the Year; Spartans Place Four on the All-Independent Team
TAMPA, Fla. - In its first season of competition the University of Tampa women's lacrosse team has compiled a 7-9 record and on Friday four players were named to the All-Independent Team. Leading the way for the Spartans was Morgan Cheripko who was a first team selection and was named Freshmen of the Year.
Cheripko has played in every game for the Spartans and leads Division II with 147 draw controls, averaging 9.19 per game. Cheripko has picked up at least 10 draw controls in eight games this season. She is also tied for the team lead with 45 points (36 goals, 9 assists), and his picked up 30 ground balls on the season.
Being named to the second team All-Independent were attackers Mallory Mays and Emilie Barbosa, and midfielder Eileen Barrett.
Mays has played in every game for the Spartans and is tied for the team lead with 45 points. She has netted 37 goals on the season, including a program high six goals in the 14-10 win over Erskine.
Barbosa has played in every game this season, starting 14 of them. She has tallied 25 goals and dished out a team-high 10 assists. Barbosa tallied four points on four separate occasions this season. Barbosa ranks fourth on the Spartans picking up 24 ground balls on the season.
Barrett has played in 13 games, starting 12 of them for Tampa. She leads the Spartans with 17 caused turnovers and has tallied 18 ground balls and 17 draw controls. Barrett has netted 14 goals and dished out four assists this season. In the win over West Virginia Wesleyan Barrett netted a hat trick and caused four turnovers.
Cheripko, Mays, and Barrett were also named to the All-Freshmen team.
The Spartans will return to action Sunday night at 7 p.m. when the travel to Winter Park to take on Rollins.
