UT Women's Lacrosse End Non-Conference Matchups on a High Note
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Tampa Women's Lacrosse team celebrates St. Patrick's Day with a win over their last non-conference matchup of the season against No. 13 University of Indianapolis.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Looking to continue their win streak, the nationally ranked Spartans struck first as Allie Peebles found senior attacker Georgia Glowaki to net the first goal of the game. However, less than a minute later, Cece Colombo would be given a two-minute penalty, allowing the Greyhounds to take advantage of the man-up opportunity to even up the score with a goal by Mackenzie Winn. With a new possession, Tampa would win the draw control and move the ball quickly down the field. Gracie Colombo would eventually feed the ball inside to Glowaki, who would tally her second goal of the day. Leading the match at 2-1, Jenna Myhal would extend the Spartans' lead with a goal from the free position spot. But, Tampa was not out of the woods yet as Indianapolis would score back-to-back goals on graduate goalie Alex Walling to cut the lead. With the third penalty of the game being given to the Greyhounds, senior midfielder Sarah Hinkle would earn an unassisted goal, giving the Spartans a one-goal advantage before ending the first quarter.
Within 20 seconds after the start of the second quarter, Glowaki would find the back of the net from the free position spot, earning her first hat trick of the season. Two minutes later, Cece Colombo would tally another Spartan goal on the scoreboard off a Peebles assist, giving Tampa a three-goal advantage for the first time in the match. This did not intimidate Indianapolis as Greyhound player Joey Fowler would score three consecutive goals to tie things up at 6-6. However, it would be the Spartans to end the first half on top as Myhal scores a free position goal, giving Tampa a 7-6 lead.
After the break, the Greyhounds seemed to have found a spark as they quickly tacked on a goal in the first minute, but it would not last as the Spartans would stay on the attack for the rest of the third quarter. Hinkle would nab her second goal of the game while Myhal would become the second Spartan to earn a hat trick as she tallies another goal in a similar fashion from the free position spot. With a lead at 9-7, Cece Colombo would be the last goal scorer of the quarter as she winds up and puts the ball in the back of the net, giving the Spartans a three-goal advantage for the second time.
Heading into the last 15 minutes of the match, Tampa looked to secure the win by adding on a few more goals to the score, but it would be Indianapolis to capitalize on an opportunity and score first. Peebles would respond later with her first goal of the day off an assist from Riley McGettigan, making it 11-8. While Megan Dunn would tack on another goal for the Greyhounds, it would not help as the Spartans would continue to knock on their opponent's doorsteps. At the 3:16 mark, senior midfielder Cece Colombo would earn her third goal of the day, making it her third hat trick of the season. Following suit, Hinkle would become the fourth Spartan of the day to tally a hat trick as she nabs the last goal of the match, finalizing the win at 13-9.
