No. 1 Tampa Routs No. 3 Adelphi in Weekend Contest
TAMPA, Fla. – The unanimous No. 1 ranked University of Tampa Spartans cruise past No. 3 Adelphi in a rematch of the 2024 National Championship.
How It Happened
- The pair of Jenna Myhal and Sarah Engle opened up the scoring for the Spartans with two goals early into the game.
- It didn't take long for Tampa to break open the scoring in the second quarter as Engle notched her 14th of the season only 56 seconds into the quarter.
- With just around 11 minutes left in the quarter, Isabel McGarvey recorded her third goal on the season, giving Tampa a 5-1 lead.
- Sophi Wrisk would follow up by ripping a shot past the Adelphi goalkeeper for her ninth goal of the season.
- Engle continued her hot start to the season as the USA Lacrosse Magazine Player of the Week notched four goals in the first half.
- Tampa's offense got off to a hot start as the team had six different goal-scorers to open the game in the first half.
- Tampa commanded every aspect of the game in the first 30 minutes: 19-8 shots, 13-3 shots on goal, 9-5 draw controls, and 8-6 caused turnovers.
- The second half was much of the same as Tampa outscored Adelphi 11-3 in the second half, holding them scoreless in the fourth quarter.
- McGarvey and Mekelsey Montgomery each recorded a goal in the closing minutes of the final frame, putting a stamp on Tampa's decisive 20-6 win.
Spartans Performances
- The duo of Engle and Wrisk combined for 10 goals tonight.
- Payton Howell recorded three goals and four assists
- Goalkeeper Paige Borkowski recorded three saves in 24 minutes of play tonight.
- Tampa also had the advantage on groundballs with 26 to Adelphi's 17.
- Lexi Waters dominated in draw controls as she had eight, leading all players tonight.
