No. 1 Tampa Tops USA Lacrosse Magazine Rankings
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa women's lacrosse team remains at No. 1 in this week's USA Lacrosse Magazine national rankings, marking the seventh consecutive week—and eighth time overall, including the preseason—that the Spartans sit atop the poll. Their top-ranked status sets the stage for the most anticipated matchup of the season as No. 2 Florida Southern visits Tampa on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
This week's ranking follows dominant performances against No. 23 Mercy, in a rescheduled game, and No. 8 Pace. The Spartans defeated both nationally ranked opponents by an average of 11 goals, holding each to their lowest goal totals of the season. Additionally, Peyton Howell and Lexi Waters swept the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week honors. Marking the second time this season Tampa has swept the weekly awards, they now own five total Player of the Week honors—more than any other school in the conference.
The undefeated Sunshine State Conference rivals will meet for the only time in the regular season, though a potential postseason rematch remains in play. Last season, Tampa won two of three matchups against Florida Southern, with just four total goals separating the teams. As the Spartans prepare for their biggest test of their national championship-defending campaign, another top-10 SSC showdown looms. Just three days after Wednesday's clash, Tampa will travel to face No. 7 Embry-Riddle.
