Women's Lacrosse Defeats Lynn, Advances to NCAA Quarterfinal

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa women's lacrosse team defeated Lynn for the second time this season to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

 

How It Happened

  • Tampa struck first after Sarah Engle found Kaylee VanVladricken just fifty seconds in.

  • Sia Markowski would double the Spartans' lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the first quarter.

  • Lynn would net its first goal of the game with a little over two minutes to play in the quarter off a free position, but freshman Maddie Szyluk would respond to head into the second up two. 

  • The Fighting Knights would tally the next goal of the game, cutting the Spartans' lead to just one.

  • However, a second-quarter hat trick from senior Sophi Wrisk and goals from Markowski and Szyluk would put Tampa up by four at the half. 

  • The third quarter saw only two goals total, one coming from each team, so the Fighting Knights' deficit would remain the same heading into the fourth quarter.

  • After Isabel McGarvey opened up the scoring in the final quarter of play after a feed from Christina Sato, the game would be delayed due to lightning.

  • Lynn would respond with two goals, but Tampa would follow suit and score two of its own, keeping the game out of reach.

 

Spartan Performances 

  • Goalie Savvy Barbosa tallied 14 saves, including seven in the first quarter.

  • Szyluk and Wrisk each recorded hat tricks.

  • Engle registered a game-high four assists.

  • Lexi Waters finished the game with four caused turnovers.

  • Isabella Avila had four groundballs, two draw controls, and caused two turnovers.

 

Up Next: Tampa will host Florida Southern in an NCAA Quarterfinals matchup at Naimoli on Saturday, May 17th at 3 p.m. in what will be the third time these two programs face off this season.
