Spartans Take Four Races at Head of the South
AUGUSTA, Ga. - The University of Tampa rowing team enjoyed a successful start to its 2013-14 campaign with a total of four first-place finishes at the Head of the South on Saturday.
After winning last week at the Head of the Hooch, the Mixed 2X team of Stephen Long and Taylor DeMesa claimed another top effort. The duo finished in 18:02.79, defeating second-place Catawba by over a minute-and-a-half.
Tampa also finished first in the Women's Lightweight 4+, being clocked at a time of 19:24.45. The team of Mary Lee Gibson, Kelly Alfano, Demi Hasapoglou, Rhianna Seferian and Meagan Hoffman outpaced competition from VCU and Georgia.
The Women's Club 2 team of Alice Rodgers and Madeline Pelon followed up with a first-place showing, being timed at 25:03.57.
Head coach Bill Dunlap placed two teams in the Women's 2X, with the team of Taylor DeMesa and Stephanie Brouwer finishing first in 19:21.54. Rebecca Bross and Kelly Alfano also participated, placing third in 21:31.84.
Tampa returns to action on March 15 at the Mayor's Cup, which will take place at the Tampa Bypass Canal.
