
Tampa Rowing Set for SSC Championships
Competition begins at 8:45 am on Friday.
SARASOTA, Fla. - The 2018 Sunshine State Conference Rowing Championship is set for Friday at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota. Barry University will serve as the host institution.
The championship will begin at 8:45 a.m., with the Second/Third Women's Varsity 4 Exhibition. The Women's Varsity 4 Final starts at 9 a.m., followed by the Women's Varsity 8 Final at 9:15 p.m. The awards ceremony will take place at 10 a.m.
Barry accounts for two of the SSC's three National Championships in women's rowing, having won back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016. Nova Southeastern captured the league's first national title in 2013, where Barry was the National Runner-Up. Nova Southeastern was runner-up in 2014 and Barry also came in second in 2006.
There will be three nationally ranked teams competing for the conference championship in 2018. Florida Tech, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation, looks to capture their eighth SSC title, after winning last years conference championship. Barry will enter the conference championship at No. 5, while Nova Southeastern is sitting at No. 8 as of the April 4th poll released by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
Embry-Riddle, Rollins, and Tampa will also be competing in the 2018 SSC Rowing Championships.
This year marks the sixth consecutive SSC Rowing championship at Nathan Benderson Park. The venue was home to the 2014 World Cup Final and 2015 World Cup Final of the Modern Pentathlon. Prior to Nathan Benderson Park, the SSC championship was held at Canal 54 in Fellsmere (2008-2011).
