Busy FIRA Race in the Books for Spartans
SARASOTA, Fla. - The University of Tampa rowing team competed at the 2019 Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA) Championships over the weekend, finishing with 16.5 points.
The Novice 8+ turned in a sixth-place finish and time of 7:52.40 from the group of Lauren Blake, Kayla Bell, Sienna Gutierrez, Savannah Martin, Sam Volkens, Grace McGhee, Katie Sturmer, Liv Nikopoulos and coxswain Reagan Bieze.
The Spartans were third in their race in the Novice Lightweight 4+. The UT rowers were Kayla Bell, Liv Nikopoulos, Sienna Gutierrez, Grace McGhee and coxswain Jess Barone.
A second-place finish was registered in the Novice 4+ from Lauren Blake, Savannah Martin, Sam Volkins, Katie Sturmer and coxswain Reagan Bieze.
The Varsity Lightweight 4+ rowers of Sarah Manno, Marissa Henderson, Brooke Rogers, Cassie Bricker and coxswain Maxie-Lew Dunn were timed at 8:33.86 in a runner-up effort.
In the Varsity 4+, a time of 8:27.36 was good for fifth place from Abbey Grau, Kiara Williams, Bridget Maxwell, Sam Stewart and coxswain Erin Winslow.
UT competed to a second-place finish in the Varsity 2x as the rowers were Erin Hanson and Hanna Vernetti. They were clocked at 8:41.39.
Tampa was sixth in the Varsity 2x as rowers Abbey Grau and Kiara Williams were timed at 8:34.69.
The Spartans return to action at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships on April 19-20 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
