TAMPA, Fla. - The number three ranked West Florida Argonauts took down the #18 Tampa Spartans by a score of 2-1 on Friday in a heated matchup. The Spartans record falls to 4-3 while the Argonauts notched their sixth win of the season to remain undefeated.
West Florida's Dernelle Mascall put the Spartans in an early hole when she fired in a shot in the nineteenth minute beating Tampa's Kendall Bourdon.
Just two minutes into the second half, however, the Spartans erased the 1-0 lead when sophomore Megan Tobin lobbed a corner kick to junior Martha Bromfield who headed the ball past West Florida's Courtney Jones.
The Argonauts managed to break the 1-1 tie with just under twenty minutes remaining in the contest when, after Spartan goalkeeper Caitlin Fox made a deflected save, junior Marcela Franco kicked in the deciding goal.
West Florida finished with six shots; Tampa finished with three.
The Spartans play at Saint Leo University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Their next home contest is September 29th at 6 p.m.
