TAMPA, Fla. - The 18th-ranked Tampa Spartans (10-4) snapped a six-game winning streak with a 3-2 loss in a double overtime thriller against Armstrong Atlantic State (8-4-3).
The Spartans fell behind in the first half by two goals, both coming off the foot of Pirates junior Kristin Burton. The first goal came at the 23rd minute and was assisted by freshman Pordis Petursdottir. Five minutes later, Burton struck again-this time unassisted.
Tampa rallied back in the second half to tie the game and send the match into overtime. In the 76th minute, Shelby Kuni put the Spartans back into the game with a header off a corner from fellow senior Courtney Evans. With Megan Tobin put the tying goal in the back of the net off a free kick with three minutes remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates sealed the game in a 103rd minute with a goal by Brittany Carr off an assist from Kristin Burton.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Lakeland and face the Moccasins of Florida Southern. Game time is 6 pm.
