Spartans Step Up on Senior Night
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (12-5-1, 6-1-1) women's soccer team honored the final regular season game for its six seniors with a 5-0 victory over Florida Tech (11-6, 3-5 SSC) to conclude its regular season.
On senior night, UT's seniors accounted for three goals and two assists as senior Courtney Evans scored the first goal in the 32nd minute. The score was assisted by her twin sister and fellow senior Brittney Evans in the lone goal of the first half.
Freshman Jazmin Perry gave UT a 2-0 lead with a goal coming just over three minutes after halftime. Brittan Spence and senior Marissa Mohammed were credited with the assist. Spence then stretched the Spartan lead to three goals as she scored at the 53:35 mark on the first of two Megan Tobin assists.
Brittney Evans added another Spartan goal in the 75th minute for Tampa. UT then took a 5-0 lead when its all-time leading goal scorer, Shelby Kuni, connected on her team-leading 10th of the season halfway through the 82nd minute. Amy Triano had the assist, her first of the year.
Freshman Kendall Bourdon went the distance in goal as she registered her fourth shutout of the season. She finished with four saves, while facing six shots. For the match, UT oushot FIT 15-7, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
The victory assures the Spartans at least a three-seed in the upcoming Sunshine State Conference tournament. Florida Southern (7-0) and Rollins (5-0-1) will meet to decide the championship as Rollins holds a one-game lead over Tampa for the second spot. The Tars, however, have two matches remaining, against Florida Southern and Saint Leo.
The first round of the SSC tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, though the top two seeds receive a bye. The semifinals and finals will be played at Florida Southern or Rollins on Nov. 7-9.
