WINTER PARK, Fla. - The University of Tampa (12-6-2) women's soccer team was eliminated from the Sunshine State Conference tournament as the Spartans suffered a 3-2 double overtime loss to #22 Florida Southern College (14-4).
Princess Haley tallied a pair of first half goals to give Florida Southern a 2-1 advantage heading into the half. Following Haley's first goal, Brittney Evans answered for Tampa at the 24:33 mark. Brittan Spence had the assist as she crossed the ball to Evans on the top center of the box.
Megan Tobin scored the lone goal of the second half as her score at 74:16 evened the score at 2-2 and forced overtime. The penalty kick goal followed a foul by the Mocs in the box.
Following a scoreless first overtime and just 23 seconds away from a shootout, Erin Hopkins sent the Moccasins to the SSC Finals on a header that was played from the right corner. Liz Gorman and Haley had the assist on the game winner.
UT outshot Florida Southern 22-14 on the match, including a 9-6 edge on shots on goal. Kendall Bourdon started in goal for Tampa, recording two saves in just under 110 minutes of play.
Tampa now awaits word on its fate in the NCAA South Regional. The Spartans expect to earn one of six bids to be handed out to regional teams. The regional is slated for November 14-16 at campus sites.
