TAMPA, Fla.- The University of Tampa (6-11-1, 2-6 SSC) women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss Wednesday night to Saint Leo University (8-4-1, 3-5 SSC) in its last game of the season.
Sara Macko opened up the scoring for the Lion's in the first half when she shot a hard ball past Tampa goalkeeper Kendall Bourdon inside the 37 minute. Junior Megan Tobin answered for UT when she gained possesion of an attempted clear by Saint Leo's defense and struck a ball past keeper Christina Coca to tie the score at 1-1 to end the half.
Chrissy Darwell broke the tie at 68th minute for the Lions when she headed a ball into the top left corner of the net when she received a cross off a corner kick from Sara Macko.
Play at the end of the game was furious as Tampa tried to tie the contest up in the game's wanning moments. The Spartans had two excellent scoring chances in the final two minutes but were unable to score the equalizer.
Tampa outshot Saint Leo 9-7 and had a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks in the feisty match that featured three yellow cards - two to UT and one to the Lions. Bourdon recorded four saves on the night.
Saige Steinmetz and Renata Figueira were recognized prior to the contest as the pair played in their final contest on the Tampa pitch.
