Spartans Shutout Lynn In SSC Showdown
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The University of Tampa (10-5, 4-3 SSC) women's soccer team registered a 2-0 victory over Lynn University (5-6-2, 2-5 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference meeting.
"The girls worked really hard today in a game we knew we had to win to push for the playoffs," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "Although our performance itself wasn't anywhere close to the level we have played of late, we still managed to do enough to get the win. This is a great result and puts us in a good position going into the last round."
Gabby Jolin netted the game-winner for the Spartans in the 12th minute, marking her first goal as a Spartan. Courtney Peffley assisted the score on a cross from the left wing.
Tampa added an insurance goal in the 85th minute as leading scorer Luana Miessa connected on her eighth goal of the season. Jolin and Peffley assisted on UT's second goal.
The Spartans outshot the Knights 23-8, including a 9-4 edge on shots on goal. Miessa led all Spartans with three shots. Freshman goalkeeper Leah Cesanek had her seventh shutout of the season as she finished with four saves.
Two regular season games remain for the Spartans, including a Sunday afternoon game versus Clayton State University. Game time is 1 p.m. at Pepin Stadium. UT will offer live stats and a webcast through www.tampaspartans.com.
