Spartans Play To Draw With Armstrong Atlantic
COLUMBUS, Ga. - In a battle between a pair of team's that each advanced to their respective NCAA Regional finals in 2010, the University of Tampa (6-3-1) and Armstrong Atlantic State University (7-2-1) played to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of play.
"The girls were fantastic again today," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "We thoroughly deserved our result and were the stronger team in OT. Our mentality was excellent and we battled hard for every challenge."
Both goals were scored in the first half, with Tampa striking first on a Jazmin Perry goal at 27:19. Fellow senior Charlotte White assisted on Perry's team-leading eighth goal of the season. White successfully played the ball into the box, where Perry beat the Pirate keeper for the game's first goal.
Perry would finish the contest with a team-high four shots, including one on goal. Brittan Spence added three shots for UT.
Armstrong would answer five minutes later, on an unassisted score by Nadima Skeff in the 32nd minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Emelie Karstrom enjoyed another solid effort for the Spartans, finishing with four saves. AASU totaled 14 shots, compared to 10 for Tampa.
"Although the stat sheet shows we were outshot by a few, we got ourselves in dangerous positions and with better decisions could've shaded the win," comments Lucey. "AASU will be in the top two in their region by season's end and we hope for a rematch in November."
The Spartans return home where it will host Lynn on Thursday in its SSC home opener from Pepin Stadium. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. UT will offer live stats and a webcast through www.tampaspartans.com.
