Spartans, Moore Break Five Records in 13-0 Win
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (2-1) women's soccer team put on a record setting performance in the 13-0 win over Florida Memorial University (0-2) on Tuesday evening at Pepin Stadium.
"The players felt they had a point to prove after a tough loss on Sunday," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "Their reaction was excellent and I'm delighted with their attitude and application."
The Spartans were paced in the first half by Lauren Moore, whom scored five goals in minutes 10, 13, 15, 21, and 24. Moore now holds the record for most goals scored (five) and points (10) in one game for UT women's soccer.
"We have a long road ahead and many areas of improvement," comments Lucey. "With the schedule, it's been difficult to practice regularly."
The previous record of four goals was set four times in the program's history. Jazmin Perry most recently scored four goals against Warner in the 2010 season.
"Special congratulations to Lauren Moore on a new school record," states Lucey. "I'm very proud to have coached Shelby Kuni who previously held the record and is still the all time leading scorer. Shelby was kind enough to offer her sincerest congrats to Lauren after the game. I'm sure she still wants to keep her all time scoring record though."
Cici Gonzalez and Jenny Karl each added a goal to give UT a comfortable 7-0 lead going into the second half.
Tampa was determined to break records in the second half, as they registered six more goals by six different players.
The 13 goals scored were the most by a UT women's soccer team, which broke the previous record of 11 goals set in the 2011 season against Mercy.
The six, second half goals were scored by Megan Lawerence, Nicole Munnelly, Kayti Simonson, Amber Pennybaker, Gonzalez, and Karl.
Gonzalez finished with two goals and two assists, while Karl recorded two goals and one assist.
Courtney Peffley, Beate Jaeckel, Gabby Russo, Joanna Burr, Arielle Gonzalez, and Simonson each had one assist in the victory.
Jess Frank and Pennybaker recorded two assists a piece on Tuesday.
The Spartans also broke the team assists record in a game with 13. The previous record was 12 set in the 2011 season against Mercy.
The team shots record was also broken on Tuesday night, as the Spartans took 47 shots. The previous record of 44 was set in 1999 against Andrew.
"We have a lot of tough opponents ahead and will be preparing for our next challenge this weekend," concludes Lucey.
The Spartans next game will be at home, Pepin Stadium, against Warner at 7 p.m., on Friday. Live stats and an audio broadcast will be available at TampaSpartans.tv.
