Second Meeting Results in Scoreless Tie Between Tampa and Rollins
WINTER PARK, Fla. - Following 110 minutes of women's soccer, neither the No. 24 University of Tampa (10-3-1) or Rollins College (7-4-1) could muster a goal as the contest ended in a 0-0 tie.
"I am very proud of the team tonight," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "We battled and fought for every ball and were also able to play some decent soccer at times. A tie was probably a fair result in the end as both teams had opportunities to win the game."
After being outshot 7-4 in the first half, the Spartans seized control of the match while posting a 9-3 advantage in shots in the second half and both overtimes combined. Tampa also had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks and a 7-5 edge in shots on goal and did not allow a Rollins shot in either overtime period.
"We knew Rollins would be a difficult team to play at their place on this small field," states Lucey. "We coped quite well and were the better team in the second half and overtime."
Senior Courtney Peffley notched six shots to lead all Spartans, with two on target. A total of seven other Spartans had at least one shot in the match.
Kori Butterfield earned her fourth shutout of the season as the junior goalkeeper from Onalaska, Wash., finished with five saves.
"We need to recharge the batteries and travel to PBA on Saturday in another tough game," comments Lucey.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday in West Palm Beach, Fla., in a non-conference match with Palm Beach Atlantic University. The South Region contest is slated for noon. Live stats will be available through TampaSpartans.com.
