No. 8 Spartans Storm Past Hurricanes
TAMPA, Fla.- The No. 8 University of Tampa Spartans (2-0) defeated the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes (0-2) on Saturday by a score of 10-0 at Pepin Stadium. The victory marks the 200th win in program history.
"This was milestone win for the program and we are delighted for our alumni and current players in achieving our 200th win," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "Everyone who has ever been a part of this program can share in the achievement and feel proud of how the program has grown since its inception in 1998."
It did not take long for the Spartans to get on the scoreboard as Gabby Russo scored her second goal of the season ten minutes into the game. Candice Shields scorched a goal from almost mid-field to put the Spartans up 2-0. Shannon Walisch added a goal in the 22nd minute to stretch the lead to 3-0 at the half.
The Tampa offense erupted for seven goals in the second half. Walisch ended the game with a hat trick. Cici Gonzalez and Chelsea Martin also added two goals apiece for the Spartans. Russo, Jenny Karl, and Kaley Ward each contributed with two assists.
Tampa concluded the match with a school record 98 shots, demolishing the previous record of 47, set last season against Florida Memorial.
"The girls have been working hard all preseason on developing a better understanding of how we want to play and incorporate it into our first few games," states Lucey. "Although our finishing isn't at the level we expect, our creativity and possession has been excellent. We know tougher games are just around the corner and we will need to raise our game accordingly. Some of the younger players have adapted very well and are ready to play at this level. Our depth should be good if we can remain healthy."
Tampa returns to the field on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Pepin Stadium. Live stats and an audio broadcast will be available through TampaSpartans.tv.
