Tampa Stays Perfect in Fifth Straight Shutout
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 9 University of Tampa (5-0) women's soccer team notched its fifth consecutive shutout in a 2-0 victory over Tusculum University (1-3-1) on Sunday at Columbus State University in a neutral site contest.
"I'm happy to walk away from here with two wins," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "We played some wonderful soccer at times, but still have a lot to work on."
Defender Candice Shields connected on the game-winner in the 22nd minute as scored from 30 yards out on a goal assisted by Audrey Hayward. UT would add a late score on an own goal with seven minutes to play.
"This was a tough opponent today that has given us battles over the years," states Lucey. "I'm proud of the way we fought and never backed down physically too."
Tampa outshot the Pioneers by a 15-2 mark and also registered 10 shots on goal. Kori Butterfield notched two saves for the Spartans in goal. UT is now within two games of the school record for consecutive shutouts, which was seven in the 2006 season.
"Unfortunately Kori picked up a serious injury with an over the top challenge by our opponent," comments Lucey. "Hopefully she will have a speedy recovery and get back on the field quickly. We have a challenging week ahead with Barry and Nova. Both are playing well and scoring goals."
The Spartans return to the pitch on Wednesday in Miami Shores, Fla., against Barry University in a non-conference meeting with the Buccaneers. The game is slated for 4:30 p.m. Live stats and a broadcast will be available through TampaSpartans.com by clicking the women's soccer schedule.
