Florida Southern Stuns No. 14 Tampa in Double Overtime Loss
TAMPA, Fla.-The University of Tampa women's soccer team fell late in double overtime to Florida Southern College by a 1-0 score in the quarter final of the Sunshine State Conference tournament on Tuesday night at Pepin Stadium.
The Spartans drop their record to 15-3-1 with the Moccasins improving to 5-10-4 for the season.
After completed regulation play, in the 106th minute, the Moccasins jumped on the board when Kirra Rainbow sent the ball past Alyson Gregorowicz on the weak side to end the game.
Despite the loss, the Spartans dominated the first half tallying seven shots over the Moccasin but were unable to convert to put the team on the board. The combination of keeper Gregorowicz and the Spartan defense held the Moccasins to two total shots.
Tampa and Florida Southern continued their offensive battles throughout the second half. Tampa upped their total shots to 14 with Florida Southern improving to six. The teams were sent scoreless into overtime.
Senior Cina Salemi sparked hope for the Spartans with a free kick in the 95th minute. Moccasin's keeper Erin Moseley captured the ball to keep the score even.
Within minutes of the start of the second overtime, Gregorowicz prevented the Moccasins' Kristy Legoas from breaking the tie with her fourth save of the match.
Overall, Tampa outshot Florida Southern 19-9 with seven additional shots on goal.
