Spartans Up Three Spots in NSCAA Poll
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - After opening the 2014 campaign at No. 18, the University of Tampa women's soccer team is now listed at No. 15 in the nation according to the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II rankings.
The Spartans are now 3-0 while outscoring their opponents 14-1. The three victories are over NCAA Division II opponent Carson-Newman along with a pair of in-state opponents in Webber International and Southeastern.
Tampa is one of two SSC schools in the top-25 as Rollins College comes in at No. 9. Regional foe West Florida sits at No. 2. Future opponent and SSC foe Barry is also listed as receiving votes.
Junior Cici Gonzalez leads the Spartans through three matches with four goals and three assists. Chelsea Martin has notched a pair of goals as Lauren Moore and Amber Pennybaker lead the squad in assists with five and four respectively.
Defensively, UT has allowed just four shots while outshooting opponents 84-4. Freshman Caroline Frykgard has earned the start in goal, notching a pair of saves. Classmate Sydney Ross also has a save as the pair has combined on two shutouts.
UT has now been ranked for 20 consecutive weeks. Additionally, UT has earned a mention in the poll in a total of 13 seasons, including 12 straight.
The Spartans head on the road for a pair of neutral site contests in St. Augustine, Fla., at Flagler College. UT will meet Tusculum (Tenn.) on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by a Sunday matchup with Lees-McRae at 1:30 p.m.
