
Spartans Edge Mocs in SSC Road Victory
Box score LAKELAND, Fla. -
The University of Tampa (9-2-2, 3-2 SSC) women's soccer team defeated Florida Southern College (4-5-3, 0-5 SSC) by a final score of 3-2 Tuesday night.
Madison Cox quickly opened the scoring in the third minute as she netted a shot from the right wing. Gabby Russo was credited with the assist on the goal giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
Florida Southern responded in the 20th minute as Kirra Rainbow evened the match at 1-1. Margot Chowansky gave the Mocs a 2-1 advantage six minutes later on a shot from the box assisted by Rainbow and Jess Goedde.
Despite trailing at the half, UT edged FSC in corner kicks 3-0 as well as shots on goal 5-3.
Tampa tied the game five minutes into the second half as Amber Pennybaker notched the score. Candice Shields assisted on the goal as she played the ball down the sideline into the box.
Cici Gonzalez reclaimed the lead for the Spartans just minutes later as she connected on a shot that bounced off the right goal post as Beate Jaeckel assisted on the eventual game-winner.
Tampa outshot Florida Southern 19-6 with a 10-4 shot on goal advantage while goalkeeper Caroline Frykgard tallied two saves in the match.
