Spartans Place Five on NSCAA All-Region Team
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has announced its 2014 NCAA Division II South Region Team. UT had a total of five on the team.
Cici Gonzalez was the lone Spartan on the first team, as Madison Cox and Amber Pennybaker were on the second team. The third-team consisted of Miranda Gonzalez and Lauren Moore.
Cici Gonzalez, a junior midfielder from Lutz, Fla., leads the nation with nine game-winning goals. She concluded the 2014 season with 18 goals and 10 assists to lead the Spartans. The school's all-time leader in game-winning goals also ranked third in school history in goals, fourth in points and seventh in assists.
Cox, a freshman defender from Tampa, enjoyed a stellar year in her first collegiate season. She played in 19 games, scoring six goals and two assists from her center back position.
Pennybaker, a junior forward from Indianapolis, Ind., tallied six goals and eight assists while playing in all 21 matches. The speedy scorer was third on the team with 20 points.
Miranda Gonzalez, a freshman defender and sister of Cici, made an instant impact along with classmate Madison Cox. Gonzalez was one of four Spartans to start all 20 matches as she registered two goals and four assists. She also led all Spartans with 1,916 minutes played.
Moore, a junior midfielder from Tampa, finished 2014 with 10 goals and 11 assists. She also ranks among all-time leader in goals (fourth), points (fifth) and assists (eighth).
Voting for the all-South Region team is conducted by member coaches from regional institutions. All first-team selections will appear on the national ballot for All-American honors.
