Spartans Spear Sailfish In Weekend Matchup
TAMPA, Fla - The Tampa women's soccer team battled the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish Saturday night at a rain-drenched Pepin Stadium where the Spartans came out on top 4-3.
The contest was dominated by offense with both sides trading scores like world-class prizefighters with neither side willing to concede or admit defeat. Especially in the late goings of the match as the lead changed hands on three occasions in the final 15 minutes.
The Tampa attack was a balanced effort as four different players registered goals. Scoring for the Spartans was Cici Gonzalez, Gabby Scirica, Lauren Moore, and Nastasia Asgedom, who each tallied goals on the night. Serving as the catalysts for the offense was Devon Conway, Gonzalez, and Asgedom, who both used their great field vision to notch assists on two of the four UT goals. Driving home the game-winning goal for Tampa at the 88-minute mark was Asgedom.
Netminder Caroline Frykgard showed up big for the Spartans with four saves in the first half alone. She went on to haul in two more saves in the second half. Frykgard also recorded a save % of .667 on the night. Also stepping up big for the Spartans defense was Miranda Gonzalez and Sarah Raymond. The center backs warded off attackers making great stops in the final moments as the Sailfish made their final push trying to bring their squad level.
