Frykgard Garners SSC Women’s Soccer Defensive Honors
MELBOURNE, Fla. - After leading the Spartans to a 1-0-1 week, the University of Tampa goalkeeper Caroline Frykgard earned Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors as announced Monday by the conference office.
Frykgard led the Tampa defense, as the sophomore tallied double-digit saves and posted a perfect 1.000 save % between the two matches and hasn't conceded a goal in over 200 minutes of play.
In a 3-1 victory over SSC foe Lynn University, Frykgard recorded eight saves including several during pivotal moments late in the match. Moreover, she posted a 1.000 save percentage as the Fighting Knight's lone goal came at the 83-minute mark after Frykgard had been substituted out after the UT win was well in hand.
The netminder stepped up big for her squad in a regional matchup facing off against Valdosta State on Friday of last week. The Spartans played a hard fought defensive battle lasting 110 minutes that resulted in a nil-nil draw. Frykgard and the defensive unit played tough all contest and made some vital stops on set piece plays in the late goings. A prime example of their great defensive play was a corner taken in the 92nd minute by Valdosta State's Erin Hill.
The Tampa women's soccer team will travel to Saint Petersburg, Fla. for an SSC road contest against the Eckerd College Tritons on Wednesday, slated for a 7 p.m. start time. Live stats, as well as a live video webcast will be made available through www.tampaspartans.com.
