Tampa Falls 1-0 to #6 Rollins in Wednesday Night Match
Despite the loss, UT held #6 Rollins to their lowest scoring output this season
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa women's team hosted the #6 Rollins College Tars for their second SSC matchup of the season. The Spartans fell to the Tars by a final score of 1-0 but held Rollins to their lowest scoring output this season, as they had not scored less than three goals in a game so far this year.
The first half of the game was a back and forth battle in midfield as both sides traded fouls and possession kept switching sides. The visitors would have the better of the chances as they had five shots on goal to Tampa's one shot on target. The Spartans best chances for a goal would come in the 25th minute as Haley Pigott took a chance from distance after a bad clearance from the Tars keeper but the attempt was not able to have much power behind it and went straight to the keeper for the save while the other chance came with just under two minutes to go in the first half as defender Miranda Gonzalez would take a ball from near midfield and go all the way to the end line and send in a cross that was met at the near post by Gabby Scirica who flicked it on to the far post but no one was there to meet it for what would have been an easy tap-in goal.
Early in the second half, Rollins would take advantage of a through ball that split the two central defenders for UT and Emma Bloom was able to run onto the long pass ahead of her and chip it over Tampa goalkeeper Caroline Frykgard, who was caught way out in front of her goal and was unable to do much on the shot. After that, the Spartans would be put on their heels as they tried to fight back into the game while holding an advancing Rollins off but unlike their previous game, were unable to end their shutout as the Tars would finish off the game for the win on the road.
Overall, Tampa was unable to really bother the Rollins keeper as they were only able to put a pair of shots on target and had six shots overall while the Tars had eight shots on goal and 14 overall. Frykgard was credited with seven saves on the night as she played the full 90 minutes in her first game this season.
The team will look to bounce back as they travel south on Saturday, September 24 to take on Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach, Fla. Kickoff for the match is set for 7 p.m.
