National Powerhouse Emory Edges Spartans
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa held its own but came up short against Emory university, falling to the #2 ranked men's team 144.5-111.5 and the top-ranked women's squad 140-117. The Spartans, whose men are ranked 16th and women 13th, won a total of 10 races to stay tight with one of the top teams in NCAA III.
The 200 Free Relay team of Gregory Cerrato, Frank Kuchta, Kyle Treen and Dewy Destin were the lone relay winners, posting a time of 1:28.88. Kyle Merritt was victorious in the 100 Back (54.03) while teammates Robert Felton (200 Fly, 1:57.42), Tyler Furrer (1,000 Free, 9:47.41) and Roman Dagash (200 IM, 2:04.47) also won their respective races.
UT's women also won the 200 Free Relay behind a 1:41.41 time from Jessie Bardin, Madison Flake, Stephanie Branham and Diana Mielke. Bardin also picked up a victory in the 500 Free following a time of 5:12.06. Julie Gauvin took a pair of individual win, placing first in the 100 Breast (1:09.60) and the 200 Breast (2:28.03). Annie Emery notched the other Tampa victory in the IM with a time of 2:14.79.
Both Tampa teams are back in action again on Saturday, January 20 against Rollins and Saint Leo. Both meets will begin at 10:00 am at the University of Tampa Swimming Complex.
