Pair of Spartans Earn National Swimmer of the Week Honors
TAMPA, Fla. - After dominating the field at the Sunshine State Championships, the University of Tampa has a pair of swimmers earn National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week (NCSW) honors. Madison Flake was the recipient of the female award while Roman Dagash took the men's honor, which was announced by collegeswimming.com.
Flake, a freshman from Saint Augustine, Fla., helped Tampa claim top honors at the Sunshine State Championships, which was hosted by Rollins College over the weekend. The UT women finished with 995.5 points as they defeated Rollins, Florida Southern, Saint Leo and Eckerd. Flake had an impressive showing in the sprint and middle distance freestyle events. She started off the meet with a second place finish in the 50 freestyle (25.20). Next, she claimed the 200 freestyle title (1:56.45) turning in an NCAA "B" qualifying time. She finished up the meet taking first in the 100 freestyle (53.84) with another NCAA "B" qualifying time.
Dagash, a freshman from Haifa, Israel, led UT's men to top honors at the Sunshine State Championships as well. The Spartan men were impressive with 997.5 points in victories over Rollins, Florida Southern, Saint Leo and Embry-Riddle. Dagash turned in 3 NCAA qualifying times with one being an automatic cut time. His first event was the 200 Individual Medley (1:56.38). He took first place and achieved an NCAA "B" cut time. His next event, and next victory, was the 100 butterfly (51.55) where he turned in another NCAA "B" time. Finally, he ended the weekend with an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 200 butterfly (1:51.93), adding on another victory.
