Tampa Swimming Sets Pair of School Records in First Day of SSC Championships
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's and women's swimming teams both remain in contention following the first day of competition at the 2012 Sunshine State Conference Championships, which are being held at the Long Center.
In a bid to defend its 2011 SSC title, the Spartan women are in second place, with a total of 84 points. Nova Southeastern leads the pack with 131 points as Rollins (58), Saint Leo (54), Florida Southern (53) and Florida Tech (1) are also competing.
In men's action, Nova Southeastern (146) and Florida Southern (67) both lead Tampa (63), with Rollins (59), Saint Leo (45) and Florida Tech (27) in the field.
Tampa's 800 Free Relay team of Kristine Kassl, Heather Glenday, Alexandria Greenhill and Alex Hipolito posted a new school record with a time of 7:31.93. The time was also an NCAA B time while placing third.
UT's Briana Murphy turned in a first-place showing in the 1,000 Free, concluding the event in a time of 10:27.92 for an NCAA B result.
The Spartans set its second school record of the night in the men's 800 Free Relay, with a third-place finish from Norbert Kovacs, Jeff Fiore, Elias Dammann and David Humphrey. The record time was 6:42.49.
The SSC meet will last through Saturday. Friday will feature a busy morning of preliminary races at 10 a.m. The 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 100 backstroke will hit the pool, with finals for all events taking place at 6 p.m. on Friday. Additionally, the 200 medley relay will be held in Friday's final session.
Saturday's final day of competition will begin with 10 a.m. preliminaries in the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, and the 1,650 freestyle. The fastest swimmers in those events will advance to Saturday's finals at 5 p.m., which will also feature the 400 freestyle relay.
Prior to Saturday's final session at 5 p.m., each team's senior student-athletes will be recognized.
