Spartans Conclude Regular Season With Lopsided Win at Rollins
WINTER PARK, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's and women's swimming teams competed against Sunshine State Conference opponent Rollins College in its final regular-season meet of 2013-14, and defeated the Tars easily on both sides.
In the men's race, the No. 6 Spartans defeated the Tars 215-45, as the No. 13 women were victorious 204-56. In the women's race, Kansas University also competed, and topped the Spartans by a 195.5-61.5 tally.
The Spartan men began the race with a pair of relay wins, starting with the 200 Medley Relay team of Karl Burdis, Scott Nocco, Zane Hranac and Ricardo Moscoso (1:36.64). The 500 Free Relay group of Zach Sprague, Jacob Mackey and Kyle Freudiger also picked up a first-place effort (5:17.34).
Danny Duhig was one of three Spartan men to win a pair of individual races, as he took both the 200 Free (1:48.21) and 100 Breast (1:01.71). Runar Borgen claimed the 50 Back (24.11) and 100 Free (47.23) as Nocco championed the 50 Breast (27.79) and 100 IM (53.71).
Tampa's men took first place in every race of the meet, as other Spartans to win included Mackey in the 100 Fly (52.96), Max Coulls in the 50 Free (21.68), Burdis in the 100 Back (52.50), Damen Pheiffer in the 300 Free (2:48.43) and Freudiger in the 50 Fly (24.25).
The 200 Free Relay team of Phieffer, Borgen, Freudiger and Sprague won the fin al event of the afternoon, finishing with a time of 1:27.77.
On the women's side, Kansas won all of the races as UT had second-place performances by Heather Glenday in the 300 Free, Catherine Parker in the 50 Fly, Alex Hipolito in the 100 IM and the 200 Free Relay team.
Tampa begins postseason competition with the 2014 SSC Championships, which are scheduled for Feb. 19-22. The championships will take place in Orlando at the YMCA Aquatic Center.
