Tampa Women’s Swimming Moves Into First Place at SSC Championships
ORLANDO, Fla. - At the mid-way mark of the 2014 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships, the University of Tampa women are now in first place as its men are second overall.
The Spartans have accumulated 356 points from their women, leading second-place Florida Southern by 58 points. Other competing teams include Nova Southeastern (256), Florida Tech (163), Saint Leo (149), Rollins (136) and Lynn (106).
Florida Southern's men sit atop the leaderboard with 367 points as UT has 319. The two are followed by Nova Southeastern (290), Florida Tech (166), Saint Leo (122) and Rollins (104).
UT's women began the finals segment with a second-place showing in the 200 Free Relay from Erin Plachy, Emily Grams, Allison Noe and Marisa Barton. They were clocked at 1:35.35.
The Spartan men set a new SSC and school record with a championship in the 200 Free Relay. The winning team of Khalid Aldaboos, Jeremy Parker, Runar Borgen and Jordan Augier won with a record time of 1:20.26.
Heather Glenday earned 17 points for the Spartans in the 500 Free with a second-place effort. Her time was 4:56.89. Alex Hipolito followed up with a 200 IM championship after being clocked at 2:05.16. Erin Plachy was then second in the 50 Free with a time of 23.52.
In the men's 50 Free, Parker and Aldaboos placed third and fourth respectively with times of 20.45 and 20.55.
Tampa's women capped the evening with an SSC title in the 400 Medley Relay. A time of 3:49.20 was achieved by Danielle Bach, Hipolito, Catherine Parker and Plachy.
UT's men also won the title in the 400 Medley Relay as the champions included Karl Burdis, Philip Nordenberg, Borgen and Parker. The winning time was listed at 3:14.33.
Friday's action will begin with the 10 a.m., prelims followed by the finals at 6 p.m. The events will include the 200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast and 100 Back.
The championship with last through Saturday, with Thursday's events including the 200 Free Relay, 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free and 400 Medley Relay. The prelims are slated for 10 a.m., followed by the 6 p.m., finals.
