NCAA Halts Women's Basketball, Swimming Championships Due to COVID-19
INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Tampa women's basketball team and men's and women's swimming teams have been notified that their respective NCAA Championships have been cancelled due to COVID-19.
Women's basketball, which was slated to open play at the NCAA South Regional in Cleveland, Tenn., on Friday, will return home prior to opening play.
Both Spartan swimming teams competed in the Thursday prelims in Geneva, Ohio, following a day one where the Spartan women finished eighth and the men 19th. Both teams will also return to Tampa upon arrangement of travel.
The NCAA released the following statement on Thursday afternoon: Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.
