Spartans Sweep Sharks in Three Sets

TAMPA, Fla.- The No. 3 University of Tampa volleyball team continued its Sunshine State Conference streak as it defeated Nova Southeastern University 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in the Martinez Athletic Center.

The Spartans improve to 14-1 and 6-0 in the SSC, while the Sharks drop to 3-11 and 0-6 in conference. With the victory, Tampa's SSC streak swells to 25 straight wins since 2011.

Outside hitter Berkley Whaley led the Spartans to the tune of 10 kills, while Holly Reschke and Jessica Wagner following closely behind her with eight and seven kills, respectively. Wagner blocked a total of four Shark kill attempts.

Outside hitter Sydney Cook stepped up for the Sharks tallying 12 kills. NSU libero Candice Johnson notched 13 digs in the match.

Standout Whaley rocketed seven kills in the first set with Reschke adding an additional six. Lisenbee went 3-for-3 in the premier set to round out the 25-19 victory.

Tampa's valiant efforts continued in the second stanza with a final score of 25-11. Middle blocker Wagner slammed four kills and two blocks to lead the Spartans. Whaley registered an additional four to round out the total. The Sharks proved no match for the Spartans while registering a -.087 team attack percentage in the second set.

Outside hitter Kim Amerell fired six kills with an additional block in the final frame of play. Wagner followed suit with three kills. Both Lisenbee and Wagner tallied solo blocks to complete the 25-16 defeat.

The Spartans return to action in the South Region Crossover Tournament in a double-header facing Christian Brothers University at 3 p.m. and West Florida University at 7:30 p.m. on October 18 in Pensacola, Fla. Live stats will be made available through www.tampaspartans.tv.
