Spartan Women Excel in Final Regular Season Test
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's and women's cross country teams both competed at the Florida State Invite, with the Spartan men placing seventh and the No. 13 women coming in an impressive second.
The men's 8K, along with the women's 6K, took place at Apalachee Regional Park. The race consisted of 16 mens and 18 womens teams.
Host Florida State ¬was the lone school to defeat Tampa, as the Seminoles tallied 72 points compared to 101 for UT. Southern Miss, Jacksonville and South Florida followed the Seminoles and Spartans to round out the top five.
Freshman Laura Yarrow was once again the top UT finisher, placing 14th with a time of 22:34.7. Kelly Hagan was 16th (22:38.4) as Tallahassee native Kaia Hampton placed 18th (22:55.5).
Also running for head coach Jarrett Slaven's women's squad were Danielle Kissel (29th, 23:23.3), Christa McLeod (39th, 23:49.1), Courtney Ragan (43rd, 23:56.3), Iolani Scanlan (46th, 23:59.3), Vanessa Righeimer (58th, 24:23.2) and Liz Anthony (70th, 24:51.2).
Florida State also captured the men's crown, as UT outran Sunshine State Conference opponents Nova Southeastern, Florida Southern and Saint Leo.
Senior Tory Webb was the top UT runner, coming in at 24th with a showing of 26:42.3. Other Spartans who ran were Lewis Price (43rd, 27:14.9), Geremy Dewitt (45th, 27:17.7), Mike Zwijacz (46th, 27:19.3), Charles Toledo (52nd, 27:29.4), Peter Licari (58th, 27:40.7), Jake Bailey (78th, 28:11.6) and Mike Leone (104th, 29:04.0).
With the regular season now complete, Tampa will return to action on Oct. 20 at the 2012 SSC Championships. The race will be hosted by Rollins College in Orlando, Fla.
