TAMPA, Fla.- The University of Tampa men's soccer team rode terrific defense and even better team play to a 2-0 victory over the Flagler College Saints on Friday night. Tampa notches their second win of the young season to move to 2-1 while keeping Flagler winless in their first four matches.
Clevon George put the Spartans on the board early, taking a perfect cross from Kevin Sierra and placing it neatly in the bottom right corner to give Tampa the 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. Ryan Maxwell doubled the lead just over two minutes into the second half, hitting a rocket into the side of the net after a neat pass by Ricardo Cardoso to give Tampa a 2-0 cushion.
Coach Adrian Bush was ecstatic following the win saying, "This was a spectacular perfomance from our whole unit. It was a tremendous team effort. They worked great together, just a phenominal game."
Kevin St. John played a superb game in net for the Spartans, making three saves en route to his first shutout of the season. Sierra and Cardoso each had an assist in contribution to the winning effort.
The Spartans are back in action on Sunday to take on a tough Christian Brothers club in the second day of the Tampa Classic Tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 pm.
