TAMPA, Fla. - Goals from English freshmen Dominic Goncalves and Matt Davies helped the ninth-ranked University of Tampa men's soccer team defeat Johnson & Wales University (Fla.) 2-0 on Monday night, extending its regular season home win streak to 16 dating back to to October 20th, 2007. The win moves the Spartans to 13-1-1 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 2-13.
Tampa outshot J&W 30 to two in the contest, placing 11 shots on goal against Wildcat goalkeeper Sky Briscoe. The Spartan defense did not allow a single shot on goal from the Johnson & Wales offense.
Goncalves' goal came in the 44th minute when he drove a penalty kick past Briscoe to put Tampa up 1-0 going into the half. Just over five minutes into the second, Davies took a well-aimed shot from 65 yards out that made its way into the back of the net.
Following the victory, head coach Adrian Bush said, "The biggest game of the year is this Thursday against Saint Leo and that's all we're focusing on."
The Spartans will close out their regular season with a 7 p.m. Sunshine State Conference matchup on Thursday against the Lions.
