No. 21 Spartans Triumph Over Mocs
Box score TAMPA, Fla.-
The No. 21 University of Tampa Spartans (5-1-1) defeated Florida Southern (4-2) at Pepin Stadium Wednesday night by a final score of 3-1.
"The focus these past few weeks has been tempo and looking to be more efficient with the final product," says head coach Adrian Bush. "Tonight we had much more consistency with our overall performance."
In the 22nd minute Bay Downing put the Spartans on the board with his first goal of the season assisted by senior Andrew Clare and Craig Laird.
Florida Southern responded in the 35th minute on an unassisted goal by Edward Spansk to even the score at 1-1.
With Tampa on the attack, Chris Campbell managed to connect for Tampa's second goal of the match in the 49th minute assisted by Brandon Loafman.
The Spartans tacked on an insurance goal in the 71st minute as Monty Berrow drew a penalty kick and converted for a 3-1 lead.
The UT defense limited any comeback by the Mocs led by freshman goalkeeper Zak Downes with three saves on the evening.
"Our senior leadership has been outstanding with the 6 seniors, they have done a good job of making sure the new players understand the importance of all these out of conference tough regional opponents," states Bush. "We play the out-of-conference schedule we do to prepare us for what is the best conference in the country, the SSC. Saturday night, we open up SSC play against a fantastic Lynn team that we have a ton of respect for."
Tampa outshot Florida Southern 14-8 while holding a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. Downing and Jason Collister sported a team-high three shots in the match. Daniel Barboto and Nikolai Hammer also contributed to the Spartan offense with two shots each.
